Music Educators: I think some people didn’t understand my CPS Strike post.
I said that striking was not the correct solution. I didn’t say that the teachers don’t deserve better. I didn’t say that they should just accept being treated like crap. But to not do your job isn’t going to make things better. It’s going to hurt the kids more than teaching in crappy conditions….
Well this is bullshit if I ever saw it. Teachers are the only people standing up for some of those kids. The kids are also obligated to be in classrooms of 30+, with no AC, and what kind of education are they getting in that environment? It’s fine to talk crap about those teachers, but if they didn’t bring attention to the conditions in their school district, who would? At some point, someone needs to stand up for better working conditions, better pay, and more respect for the people who educate our nation’s children. If teachers don’t stand up for themselves, I’m sure no one else will either.
The union is doing the fighting for the students, as they are doing the contract negotiations. They need to stand up for themselves, but not by avoiding their duty to their students. I don’t think they should settle for crappy conditions, but teaching in those conditions is better than not teaching at all. Did I stutter or something?
