Getting to know you
Hi everyone! My Name is Andy and I am an 18 year old high school senior accepted into the Northern Arizona University Tuba/Euphonium studio for fall 2014. Now I know what your thinking-this kid isn’t a teacher, why would he post here?
I believe that music education can begin at nearly any age. As students we all influence each other, we learn from each other, and we build our musical...

How to Practice Less & Get More Done
How to Practice Less and Get More Done
Ever feel like there’s just so much music to practice?
Or do your students not practice piano?
We’re so hung up on practicing that we forget WHY we practice sometimes– to improve.
That’s why most practicing is a waste of time.

Reblog the announcement!

My Hiatus from tumblr.
As some of you may have noticed, I have taken an indefinite hiatus from tumblr. I was getting quite fed up with my personal blog and I almost deleted it. However, it is my involvement with #education that made me keep my account. I won’t be running my tumblrs as I used to, but I feel I am doing this community a disservice if I continue to neglect this blog. I will be returning solely to...
The world lost an amazing musician tonight.
Earl Williams left us this evening after a short battle with brain cancer. He was a great man and a legendary jazz drummer. No one plays, anymore, like he did. May he RIP.
From his BIO
“Earl Williams, a native of Detroit, Michigan, began studying drums at the early age of eleven. While in Detroit, he studied at the Detroit Conservatory of Music and the Detroit Institute of Musical...

Trumpet and Music Education
I am a music educator who majored in trumpet. I currently teach band, 2 choirs, orchestra, and jazz band. I have been teaching for almost 10 years now and started when I was 22. Taking piano seriously definitely helped me in my choral teaching skills. I also got a master’s degree in orchestral conducting. During my undergrad I took 2 years of choir, 4 years of wind ensemble, and 3 years of...
straightmaninlovewithaman asked: I just wanted to add to the last answer. I'm currently a trumpet music ed major, and I'm trying to take piano lessons and choir to equip myself to be a capable choir director, and I'm trying to familiarize myself with the orchestra world as well. As far as employment, the more experience you have in different ensembles and on different instruments will be the most beneficial....
pianistpower asked: hello! I am wondering, as a future music education major; should my principal instrument be trumpet or piano?

roastduckie asked: If dakinandone's aural skills class uses a computer program like MacGamut, the best advice is to not put it off and cram the day before it's due. If you do a little bit every night, you'll get much, much better in a much more beneficial way.
sydneybunny asked: To the ask about aural dictation, does your school use MacGamut? If they don't, I would recommend purchasing it. It unfortunately can be a little pricey (upwards of 60 dollars) but well worth it, and you can practice melodic, harmonic, rhythmic dictation. Also, practicing dictating songs you know/like is a good way too, and training yourself to hear "DO" and pick out the tonic of...
midgetsonfire asked: For specific intervals, think of specific melodies that you already know; for example, a perfect fourth is the same as "here comes the bride", a perfect fifth is the jump in star wars, a major sixth is the NBC theme, stuff like that. I'm only in the serious basics of theory so far (we havent even gotten to chords yet LOL) but maybe that'll help a little!
dakinandone asked: I'd like to ask you all something as a whole. I am a freshman in college majoring in music education and I'm doing fantastic in all my classes. I feel very good about where I'm at. Except one thing. I am god-awful at aural skills. I'm failing because of my melodic dictation test. I just want to know how I can go about practicing to help improve on this important skill....

He’s never claimed to be an editor. He runs a music ed blog. It doesn’t matter if someone is not a teacher; that...
So, I’ve read a bunch of responses. I must say this: none of you understand what I’m saying. Most of the replies have been about the bad conditions, pay, lack of funds, etc. All of those points I agree with. I am not saying that the teachers should stand for that. I thought I was already very clear about that.
My point, again that I thought was very clear, was that going on...

Thank your parents for the gift of music.
Whether you wanted to, or half heart-idly took guitar lessons as a child [music lessons], you owe your parents a vote of thanks. I found some data published in 2010 in Nature Reviews Neuroscience showing that music training for beginners of a young age may activate neurological connections that prime the brain for other aspects of human communication such as language, memory and speech.

Getting to Know You (all)
My name is “Mister Conrad” when I am with my students, and am about a thousand years old. I teach music in grades preK through 5th in a small innercity school where music instruction happens in the classrooms — there is no music room. No auditorium either.
My blog is primarily for people who work as I do, in a NYC elementary school teaching music.
Maybe it needs to switch over to...

In NYS, you must prove that you have substantial suspicion that you are in constant danger in order to carry a firearm on you. This is unacceptable. In lieu of recent tragedies across the USA, in “gun-free” places like NYS, we the people of the great state of New York are tired of not being able to defend ourselves against these nutjobs and criminals. I can’t say that Aurora...
